Today we read The Carrot Seed. My boys (for some reason all my students are boys :)) love it! I decided to incorporate some science by introducing to them the plant life cycle. The weather is great so it gives us a reason to go outside more often (hope those mosquitoes go away soon!). One of the components for pre-k reading is learning parts of a books. I decided to make them a mini book journal and go over parts of a book this way.
After reading the book I let them choose what seed they wanted to plant. The objective is to watch it grow. Eventually we will incorporate measurement to tie in some math.
We did a picture cut-out for the plant life cycle of an acorn seed. Then we pasted them in their mini books.
When they were done putting their pictures in order they got to paste one of the seeds they chose in the journal portion of their mini books.
We also put some seeds in a baggie with a paper towel and a few mL’s of water so we can watch the seeds sprout. We will eventually plant them when they are big enough.
We pasted the baggies on the window so they could get some sunlight. They will have to water their seeds like the little boy did in the book. It will be nice to see them grow.
